Dead Mans Fingers
Designing and producing packaging for alcohol products, particularly gift sets, can be challenging. The products are heavy and often fragile, and these premium products require packaging that consistently reflects the values of the brands themselves.
In the case of the Dead Mans Fingers Rum gift set, New Vision were tasked with designing and producing packaging to protect and present 8 bottles, 4 of which were glass, for sale in department stores.
After considering but ultimately rejecting the use of card fitments to hold the bottles, a Vacuum Formed tray made from recycled PET was deemed to be necessary. The bottles mustn’t spin in the pack, and the overall weight was too heavy to rely on a simple card fitment. So a plastic tray was designed to protect and secure the bottles while, at the same time, making sure that the bottle labels were always front-facing by using clever compression lugs in the tray cavities.
Next, a carton was designed to fit around the tray. The carton was made from 675 micron White Back Folding Box Board with a 100 micron window film to protect the products through the aperture in the box. This thickness of board is unusual, but was necessary for such a heavy weight of product.
The carton was then printed with a colour wash on the inside to frame the products and prevent a white interior showing through the window, followed by a 4-colour print with a water based matt varnish to the outside. The finishing touch was the Kurz Luxor foil blocking that was applied all over the carton, which truly gives a fantastic contrast to the black background.
