Sustainability / Plastic reduction and compliance

Take the plastic out. Keep the pack good.

Almost any pack can lose plastic. Doing it without the product arriving damaged, or the pack costing twice as much, is a design problem rather than a materials problem.

Approach

Designed out, not swapped out

Removing a plastic vac form and replacing it with more card is not a reduction. On the Pai Skincare Christmas range we engineered the holding mechanism into the card tray itself, so the plastic went and no replacement fitment was needed at all.

Materials

What we can specify.

  1. 01

    FSC certified board

Folding box board and corrugated from certified, responsibly managed sources, carrying the FSC mark on pack where the client wants it visible.

  2. 02

    Recycled PET

Where a formed tray genuinely is the right solution, rPET keeps the structural performance while raising recycled content.

  3. 03

    Plastic-free fitments

Card and corrugated fitments with the holding mechanism designed in, replacing vac forms rather than supplementing them.

  4. 04

    Water-based varnishes

Water-based matt and gloss varnishes across most of the carton range, in place of solvent finishes.

  5. 05

    Mono-material packs

Keeping a pack to a single material stream where possible, so it goes in the household recycling without separation.

  6. 06

    Right-sized packaging

Reducing board area and void space cuts material, transport emissions and cost at the same time.

Regulation / EPR

Extended Producer Responsibility.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) shifts the financial and operational responsibility for managing household packaging waste from local authorities and taxpayers to the businesses that place packaging on the market.

The aim is to encourage businesses to reduce packaging waste and design packaging that is more efficient, reusable and recyclable.

If your business meets the relevant government thresholds for turnover and packaging volumes, compliance with EPR registration, data reporting and waste management fees is mandatory.

At New Vision Packaging, we design packaging with EPR in mind. By reducing packaging weight, material usage and unnecessary components, we can help minimise your EPR costs while ensuring packaging remains fit for purpose. We also maintain the detailed packaging records needed to support your compliance and reporting requirements.

Regulation / PPWR

Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is a major European Union regulation designed to reduce packaging waste, increase recycling and accelerate the transition towards a circular economy.

These changes mean packaging design will become increasingly important, not just from a sustainability perspective, but also in terms of cost, compliance and market access.

At New Vision Packaging, our expertise in packaging design enables us to optimise packaging for weight, material usage, cost and recyclability, while ensuring it continues to perform as required.

The regulation introduces

  • By 2030, packaging placed on the EU market must meet recyclability requirements.
  • By 2035, packaging must be recyclable at scale.
  • Plastic packaging will be subject to increasing minimum requirements for post-consumer recycled content.
  • Unnecessary packaging, excessive empty space and over-packaging will be restricted.
  • Certain sectors will face requirements around reusable and refillable packaging.
  • PFAS and other substances of concern will be restricted in certain packaging applications, including food-contact packaging.
